Farming

Our dairy herd of pedigree Jersey cows produce milk all year round, which is used in Longley farm dairy products. The cows graze pasture around the farm and are milked twice a day in our parlour. We graze them outdoors for as much of the year as possible, housing them in our barns during the winter, bedded on straw from the farm. During this winter period, they are also fed grass from our farm, mown and stored during the summer months. The straw bedding the cows lay on becomes farmyard manure, which is then spread on our fields to provide natural fertility back to our crops.
We have a suckler herd of Red Poll cattle, which are a valuable tool in keeping the land in good heart, by grazing and trampling vegetation, along with adding manure directly to the soil. We see the Red Polls as a mower, fertiliser and soil improvement tool, with pasture fed beef being a biproduct of this activity. Red polls are a native breed, well suited to our climate and weather conditions. They are generally very docile and easy to manage, along with having good mothering instincts.
We grow a variety of crops, including wheat, barley, rye, fodder beet, maize and grass. Our crops are either used to feed our animals on the farm or sold on the open market, with all our straw used for our own animal bedding. Farmyard manure and slurry is all returned to our fields, providing organic matter and fertility. Our aim is to be as circular and sustainable as possible, reducing synthetic inputs where we can by using natural resources instead.
Dairy products made with milk from our farm
Tyers Hall Farm is part of the Longley Farm dairy business. The milk from our cows is taken to our dairy in Holmfirth, where it’s made into delicious dairy products.

Dearne Valley Farmers cluster group
In 2022 we co-founded the DEARNE VALLEY FARMERS group, with help from the Don Catchment Rivers Trust / Yorkshire Farming & Wildlife Partnership. The group aims to bring together farmers from across Barnsley and the River Dearne catchment to improve soils, biodiversity, water quality, along with providing a forum for people to get together socially and share ideas/knowledge. There are currently 36 farms involved, covering 6,500 hectares (16,000 acres) and we are proud of the work they do to produce food and improve our local environment. Our work is funded by Yorkshire Water and Natural England.
