When is it?
The 2024 competition will be held on Sunday 17th November. The competition starts for competitors at 8.30am and finishes around 4.30pm. Visitors are welcome all day to pop in and see what’s happening.
What’s on?
During the competition we’ll have several professional hedge layers competing to win the trophy. We’ll also have a novice level if you’ve attended our Introductory training day and want to compete.
We’ll also have food available from a local caterers, as well as several stands demonstrating traditional crafts.
Where is it?
This year the competition is held at Tyers Hall Farm, Doncaster Road, Barnsley S71 5ET. We’ll be cutting hedges close to our central farm area, near the main cow sheds. We’ll have some signs out to direct you.
Compete in the Competition
Open Class
South Yorkshire Hedge Laying Competition
To complete 7 yards of Hedge
Prizes for 1st place £70, 2nd place £50, and 3rd place £40
Novice Class
To complete 7 yards of Hedge (with assistance)
Prizes for 1st place £45, 2nd place £35 and 3rd place £25
Rules
Hedges are to be laid to the Yorkshire style in the demonstration section.
All dead wood to be removed.
All layers to be in line over the stools.
The finished hedge is to be 3ft high including the top rail.
The finished hedge length must join with the next section
The draw for plots will be at 8.30am prompt. work must be finished by 3.00pm prompt.
All competitors using chainsaws must:
Wear currently prescribed protective clothing
Hold a current certificate of competence or provide other proof of equivalent competence
Not use a top handled chain saw, failure will result in disqualification
The organisers cannot be held responsible in the event of any accident or for lost, stolen or damaged property.
Hot drinks and food is provided for all competitors.
